The Serial Killer Known as “The Beast” Terrorized Colombia


Some serial killers prey on society’s most vulnerable: people on the fringes of society who are not likely to be reported missing. Luis Garavito, the man known in his native Colombia as “The Beast,” might be history’s most extreme example of that type of serial murderer. Garavito singled out young boys who belonged to the lowest social classes in Colombia. Most of his victims were homeless, orphaned, or extremely poor. Garavito would ultimately be put behind bars for a staggering 138 murders, but he claims the count is as high as 400.

Garavito was born in 1957 and was the oldest of 7 children. His father was an abusive alcoholic, and Garavito left home at the age of 16. In the early 1990s, Colombia was in the midst of a violent civil war, which left many young children were left orphaned and homeless. “The Beast” took advantage of the tragic situation, targeting young people who would likely not be missed if they disappeared from city streets.
