Katy Perry Scores $25 MILLION Deal For ‘American Idol’

Katy Perry is getting a staggering $25 MILLION to judge “American Idol” … this according to sources familiar with the negotiation.

Multiple sources tell us ABC was desperate to sign a name before the Upfronts last week, when honchos announced she was the lead judge. As one source put it, “Katy had all the leverage. If ABC ended up announcing the show without a judge, they’d be screwed.”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Pop star Katy Perry will join reality singing competition “American Idol” on ABC, the network said on Tuesday, adding a big name with legions of young fans for its revival of the show.

Perry, 32, is the first major name to come aboard the reboot of the show, which was canceled by Fox Broadcasting last year after 15 seasons amid declining viewership ratings. The new “American Idol” will air in 2018.

Fox slams ‘American Idol’ return as show gets revived on ABC

“American Idol” is coming to ABC after 15 seasons of Fox.

Fox’s head honchos clearly aren’t singing the praises of “American Idol” being revived so quickly after its farewell season.

The network’s TV chairman Dana Walden slammed production company FremantleMedia for bringing back “Idol” and selling it to ABC just one year after Fox heavily invested in a marketing campaign for the show’s final season, Entertainment Weekly reported.

“They were determined to get this show back on the air as quickly as possible,” Walden told reporters during a conference call Monday, according to EW. “We spent about $25 million sending a clear message that it was the farewell season. It felt to us it would be extremely fraudulent to bring the show back quickly, that fans would not appreciate being told one thing and then having the show brought back right away.”

Walden confirmed that Fox did indeed place an offer to bring the reality singing competition back to its airwaves — where it was broadcast for 15 seasons — but ABC ultimately won the bidding war.

American Idol on ABC a “Tough One” For Fox, But Felt It’s “Extremely Fraudulent” to Bring it Back so Soon

American Idol made the big jump from Fox to ABC a year after its farewell season and Fox boss Dana Walden had plenty to say about the surprising revival.

In a conference call with press, Walden and Gary Newman addressed Fox’s new fall schedule, the future of some MIA shows, including Scream Queens, and tackled the reality juggernaut in the room: American Idol‘s revival and big move.

“It’s obviously a tough one for us. We love American Idol…Yes, it feels bad knowing its coming back on another network,” Walden said.

According to Walden, Fox and Idol producer Freemantle sat down a month or two after the show wrapped up and discussed plans to bring it back. Walden eyeballed 2020 for the big Idol reboot on Fox, but Freemantle, well, “they were determined to get the show back on the air as soon as possible.”

“It felt to us, sitting in those initial meetings, that it would be extremely fraudulent to bring the show back that quickly…that our fans would not appreciate being told one thing and then bringing it back right away,” Walden said about Fox’s big farewell…

It’s American Idol vs. The Voice all over again.

With 12 seasons already under its belt in just six years, The Voice has proven itself a force to be reckoned with in the reality singing competition world, giving stalwart American Idol a run for its money. Now, as Idol prepares for a return to the airwaves on ABC, an epic battle already appears to be brewing.

Idol favorites Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson have each signed on as coaches for The Voice‘s upcoming 13th and 14th seasons, respectively, essentially nixing any possibility to return to the show that made them famous. This…

American Idol is returning from the dead, but its top dawgs, Kelly Clarkson and Simon Cowell aren’t coming along for the ride.

While there was originally some speculation that Clarkson, the OG Idol, would be brought onboard the show’s 16th season, Clarkson will not be returning to her reality show roots to judge right away. In fact, Variety reported on Thursday that the singer will be joining NBC’s The Voice as a Season 14 coach. The ultimate betrayal.

And in case that didn’t sting enough, Simon Cowell — one of Idol’s original three judges — says we can count him out for the revival, too.

Clarkson’s season of The Voice is set to premiere in February 2018, which means she could very well be going into a head-to-head ratings battle with Idol’s expected March 2018 debut.

“I’m so excited to join,” Clarkson told Variety. “We’ve gone back and…

Kelly Clarkson is coming to The Voice as a coach for Season 14, and former American Idol judge Harry Connick Jr. has nothing but support for the decision.

“She’s amazing. I remember when I did something with her on American Idol she was so great,” the singer and talk show host told ET’s Jennifer Peros at the premiere of the HBO original movie Wizard of Lies at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City on Thursday.

“She’s like, the perfect person to judge on a show like that,” Connick Jr. explained. “Because she knows both sides — what it’s like to have hits and…

Kelly Clarkson Tapped As ‘The Voice’ Season 14 Judge Amid Rumors She Will Return To ‘American Idol’

Kelly Clarkson will not be joining “American Idol” as judge because the singer will be heading to NBC’s “The Voice” Season 14.

According to Variety, Clarkson will be joining resident judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine in Season 14. However, a fourth judge has yet to be named by the network. “The Voice” is currently on its 12th season, and Clarkson’s fellow “American Idol” contestant, Jennifer Hudson, will act as judge in Season 13, and she will be joining Season 11 judge Miley Cyrus.

The publication revealed that the producers of “The Voice” have been urging Clarkson to join the reality TV show, but she has never said yes due to conflicts in her schedule. Clarkson herself has expressed her desire to be part of “The Voice,” and she’s not new to the concept of the show because she was also a product of a singing reality TV competition several years ago. Clarkson and Shelton are both represented by Narvel Blackstock’s Starstruck Entertainment.

Following NBC’s announcement, Clarkson released a statement expressing her excitement over her upcoming venture on television. “I’m so excited to join ‘The Voice’ on NBC. We’ve gone back and forth about a role as a coach for years, but the timing hasn’t been right until now. I have always loved…

Jennifer Hudson joining “The Voice” as a coach

“American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson is heading back to her reality TV singing competition roots.

The Oscar-winner has signed on to serve as a coach for the upcoming season of “The Voice,” stepping in for Alicia Keys, who is focusing on producing a new album.

Hudson will join “Voice” mainstays Adam Levine and Blake Shelton as well as returning coach Miley Cyrus. The “Dreamgirls” star served as a coach for the show’s U.K. edition earlier this year.

Ryan Seacrest Reportedly Close To Returning For ‘American Idol’ Reboot

It already seemed like Ryan Seacrest was everywhere. Well, get ready to see him even more.

Seacrest, who just joined Kelly Ripa as the official co-host of “Live,” is in “advanced talks” to return as the host of “American Idol” for its 2018 reboot, Variety reported Wednesday.

The trade publication, citing an unnamed source, said “final tweaks” were being worked out on a new contract for Seacrest’s “Idol” homecoming.

However, the outlet interviewed another source who claimed the talks were in the early stages and that Seacrest’s crammed schedule presented obstacles.
