Just Try to Make Sense of Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar” Music Video

After releasing her new single, “Bad Liar,” at the end of May, Selena Gomez has debuted a highly anticipated music video, helmed by former Girls director Jesse Peretz. It has a distinct 70s style, perhaps an homage to the Talking Heads’ 1977 song “Psycho Killer,” which was sampled on the track (and given the stamp of approval by David Byrne himself). It’s a departure from Gomez’s past videos, which have typically stuck to a simple format with little to no narrative or characters besides herself. “Bad Liar “ is the antithesis of these earlier videos, and it is also very, very confusing.

Throughout the three-minute-and-57-second video, Gomez takes on the roles of four different characters and their accompanying wigs: a high-school student, a gym teacher, the student’s mother, and the principal or teacher of the high school (it isn’t clear) who is also maybe the student’s step-dad or biological father. The student keeps an eye on the maybe-principal, who continues to flirt with the gym teacher before we see him head home in a car driven by his presumed wife, the…

Selena Gomez Basically Put on a One-Woman Show in the High School-Themed Bad Liar ‘Film’

At first, it might feel like you’ve uncovered an alternate version of TV show 13 Reasons Why while watching Selena Gomez’s new music video for recent single “Bad Liar.”

There’s a youthful Gomez riding a bike on a sun-soaked road to an all-American high school, walking uncomfortably through the hallways past slamming lockers, and looking distracted in class and on the basketball court — all hallmark moments in the teen drama she helped produce.

But the video for Talking-Heads-sampling “Bad Liar,” which Gomez has…

Selena Gomez Responds to 13 Reasons Why Controversy: ‘It’s Not an Easy Subject to Talk About’

Selena Gomez is standing by her Netflix show 13 Reasons Why amid claims that the breakout drama glamorizes teen suicide.

“I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused — in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time,” Gomez, 24, told E! News, noting that she is “very surprised” at the success of the project.

The critically well-received show has been widely talked about since it first hit the streaming service in March. The series, about a deceased teenager and the thirteen tapes she left her classmates about her reasons for committing suicide, draws its plot from Jay Asher’s 2007 young adult novel of the same name.

The show features scenes of rape, alcoholism, drug abuse, body shaming and sexual assault. It also features a very graphic scene showing…
